Reggie Bush
(born March 2, 1985), nicknamed The President,
is an American college football player for the University
of Southern California (USC). He plays tailback, wide
receiver, running back, and punt and kickoff returner
for the team. In 2005, he became the 71st winner of the
Heisman Trophy, and the 7th USC player ever to receive
it.
Bush is notable for his speed and
evasiveness. Known as "the human highlight reel"
Bush routinely breaks off impressive runs - often dodging,
hurdling, and spinning away from defenders in the process.
It is predicted, if he decides to forego his senior season
at USC, that he will be the first overall pick in the
2006 NFL Draft. Some football analysts have even (half-jokingly)
stated that the 2006 Houston Texans, who underwent a very
bizarre 7-game losing streak during the season that included
many down-to-the-wire heartbreaking losses, were intentionally
throwing games in the hopes of being able to get the first
pick in order to draft Bush. The Texans are currently
2-12, tied for the worst record in the league with the
San Francisco 49ers.
On December 8, 2005, Bush was awarded
the prestigious Walter Camp Award and the Doak Walker
Award. On December 10, 2005, Bush won the most prestigious
award in all of college football, the Heisman Trophy,
beating finalists Vince Young and teammate Matt Leinart
by a record margin (88% of first place votes, and on 99%
of ballots).
Biography
Reggie Bush grew up in Spring
Valley, California. His father was a campus security officer
and his mother was a deputy sheriff at the county jail.
He attended Helix High School, where he excelled at football
and track. In football, he and former Utah and current 49ers
quarterback Alex Smith led the team to two sectional championships.
He is currently studying political science at USC. Bush
etches the number "619" on top of his black under
eye markings as a tribute to the area code of southeast
San Diego county. He has lost two fumbles in his college
career, the first time against UCLA on December 4, 2004
and the second in the Fresno State game in 2005 (in which
he gained 513 total yards through rushing, receiving, punt
and kick returns). Reggie Bush was awarded the Heisman Trophy
Award Dec. 10 2005. He had 784 votes while Vince Young round
it up 79 votes. He and teammate Matt Leinart will be the
only two Heisman Trophy winners to play together in a single
game, The Rose Bowl this January 2006 against the Texas
Longhorns.
Personal
He's a political science major at USC.
His nickname is "The President" (because of
that, he humorously was singled out in remarks by President
George W. Bush during USC's national championship visit
to the White House in March of 2004). He covered the 2003
Super Bowl as a reporter for NFLHS.com.
